“Waiting for Superman” Screening and Panel Closes Out 2011 U Street Movie Series

The U Street Neighborhood Association’s Education Committee invites you to attend the final screening of the 2011 U Street Movie Series with Waiting for Superman on Saturday, October 22, 2011 from 12:00 pm to 3:30 pm at the Shaw @ Garnet-Patterson Jr. High School, 2001 10th Street, NW.  

As seating is limited, FREE registration is required to attend.

The screening of the movie will  be followed by an engaging panel discussion about the education of the District’s children, a pressing community issue.  Doors open at 12:00 pm (12:15-2:00 pm screening; 2:15-3:30 pm panel conversation).  A networking reception at Duffy’s Irish Pub and Restaurant, 2106 Vermont Avenue, will begin immediately after the conclusion of the panel discussion.

The panel discussion will be moderated by Jackie Gran and Education policy expert, and neighborhood resident. Confirmed panelists include:

  • Jason Kamras: DCPS Chief of Human Capital, featured in the film, and neighborhood resident.
  • Evelyn Boyd Simmons: ANC 2F Education Committee Chair, and parent of two Garrison Elementary students.
  • Reuben Jacobson: Senior Associate for Research & Strategy for the Coalition for Community Schools, former DC Teaching Fellow, and DCPS parent.
  • Patrick Mara: Ward 1 DC State Board of Education Representative.
  • Robinette Breedlove: Principal, Meridian Charter School.
  • Kerry Sylvia: Teacher, Cardozo High School.
  • Ann McLeod: Garrison Elementary PTA President, and parent.

There is a suggested $5 cash donation at the door.

All proceeds from donations will go to HandsOn Greater DC Cares Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service this January and directly benefit our neighborhood schools.  For over six years now, HandsOn Greater DC Cares has used this day as a vehicle to recognize Dr. King’s leadership, legacy, and life through acts of service focusing on school and education based non-profit organizations and engaging youth in service.

Your 2011 U Street Movie Series is Announced!

The theme of this year’s U Street Movie Series lineup includes  both classic and family friendly Hollywood films that feature and celebrate Washington DC,   local U Street institutions such as the Howard Theater and the 9:30 Club, and DC’s starring role in major films and documentaries addressing environmental and education issues that resonate in Washington, DC.  The U Street Movies Series will begin on May 24 and run through October.

This year’s U Street Movies Series – Harrison Field Under the Stars  schedule is:

Feature: Waiting for Superman, indoors, followed by community forum on education policy

Admission is free (but donations are welcomed!), and all films will be shown on the field at Harrison Recreation Center, 1330 V Street, NW (between 13th and 14th Streets, NW).   The date and location of the screening of the October movie, “Waiting for Superman” will be announced at a a later date.

Gates  open at 7 pm and attendees are encouraged to come early to picnic in the park (please remember, NO alcohol allowed) and listen to music spun by local DJs.   Free popcorn will be provided to early attendees by Ventnor Sports Cafe.  Showtime will be at sundown, exact time will vary.  Several local food truck vendors will be on site serving food.

At the June and August Family Nights, children can play in a moonbounce from 7:00 – 8:30 before the films begin.

Donations and sponsorships towards the event are encouraged, and will benefit the Friends of Harrison Recreation Center, established in 2009 as a project of the U Street Neighborhood Association.  The Friends of Harrison works directly with the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) with the goal of making Harrison Recreation Center a better designed, cleaner, safer, and better park in the neighborhood for all to use and enjoy.
